Banking and opening a bank account

The largest banks in Ireland are:

AIB and Bank of Ireland have the most branches in the country and are therefore often a good choice.

In Ireland, there are generally two types of bank accounts: a current account (CA) and a deposit account or savings account.

Before closing an account, you should familiarise yourself with the fees charged by the respective bank. Here is a practical comparison of the various current accounts.

Here is an overview of the various savings account options.

Opening a bank account

The quickest and easiest way to open an account is online. At AIB, you can open an account using the AIB app. Of course, you can also do this in person at a branch. To open an account in Ireland, you will usually need the following documents:

  • Proof of address
    • Proof of address can sometimes be difficult to obtain, as there is no equivalent to the Residents‘ Registration Office in Ireland and therefore no registration certificates. Proof of address is usually required in the form of an official bill from, for example, an internet, electricity or gas provider. Alternatively, car or home insurance policies showing your address are also accepted. Letters from the government are also usually accepted as proof of address. It is important to note that the proof must not be older than 6 months and must be in your name. The problem with proof of address can often turn out to be a vicious circle, as you usually need an Irish bank account to take out insurance or sign an electricity contract, which you cannot open without proof of address.
    • Tip: Register with Revenue as soon as you arrive (if you are working or paying taxes in Ireland) and have your PIN sent to your Irish address by post. This letter will definitely be accepted by the bank as proof of address.
  • Proof of identity
    • valid ID card
    • valid passport
Tip

In addition to a bank account with a traditional bank, I would recommend opening an account with Revolut, as many people in Ireland use Revolut and you can pay in shops and online without fees and take advantage of many other practical options and offers.*
